Schlumberger Donates Software to Petroleum Engineering Department

Providing petroleum engineering students and researchers at Texas Tech University with access to state-of-the-art software tools, Schlumberger donated $42.5 million of software to the Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering.

The company’s contribution, accepted during a meeting of the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents on Oct. 23, includes 100 licenses of Petrel seismic-to-simulation software along with maintenance support for the commercial geological modeling and reservoir engineering package.

“We are honored to accept such a generous gift from an industry leader like Schlumberger,” said Texas Tech University System Chancellor Kent Hance. “This gift will be a great asset to the Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering and will better prepare our students for their professional careers.”

Petrel is the only software package in the energy industry that provides a unified workflow for managing geologic resources, according to the company’s Web site. The software helps energy companies increase reservoir performance as they analyze hydrocarbons present in geologic formations and develop strategies to maximize the exploitation of those mineral resources.
