AAF Dallas Honors ‘Pathways’ With American Advertising Awards
The Dallas chapter of the American Advertising Federation announced the local winners of the 2024 American Advertising Awards, and I was honored to be part of the creative team recognized with two awards for editorial design in Pathways, UT Southwestern Medical Center’s quarterly magazine highlighting the impact of philanthropy across the institution’s mission.
The American Advertising Awards are the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition. Judged by industry peers, top designs are selected based on the creative dimensions of each entry.
Recognized with a Silver ADDY in the editorial spread or feature category was the feature story for Restoring Power, which ran in the Summer 2023 issue of Pathways. Taking inspiration from a reference in the story to the Manhattan Project, the story opener features the console of a 1940s power plant reimagined for powering the human brain. Featuring 3D art by designer Jay Caldwell, the knobs and dials create a juxtaposition between the technology of a bygone era and the laser like focus on solving the latest challenges in medicine and science.
Also receiving a Silver ADDY in the same category was the feature story for Empower, which also ran in the magazine’s Summer 2023 issue. Highlighting a decades long partnership between Mary Kay Foundation and UT Southwestern, the story’s opener takes inspiration from the global direct sales cosmetic company’s products with the headline hand lettered by designer Jay Caldwell emblazoned across the spread in lipstick. Both feature spreads were the only editorial projects recognized in this year’s competition.
The Dallas chapter of the American Advertising Association is the city’s oldest civic organization with more than 1,000 advertising professionals representing the advertising industry. Nationwide, more than 25,000 entrants participated in this year’s American Advertising Awards.
