Society of Publication Designers Selects ‘Pathways’ as Medal Finalist
The Society of Publication Designers has announced the medal finalists for its fifty-ninth annual SPD awards, and I’m excited to lead the creative team for Pathways, which was among those honored.
Published by The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Pathways is a quarterly magazine highlighting the impact of philanthropy across the institution’s mission. This year marks the publication’s first selection as an SPD finalist. “Restoring Power” was honored in the design category for best single page or spread among custom publishing, brand, corporate, institutional or educational magazines.
The story, which highlights a gift to UT Southwestern to support cerebellar research, takes inspiration from a reference in the story to the Manhattan Project. Across the opening spread, the console of a 1940s power plant was reimagined as a control panel for powering the human brain. Featuring 3D art by designer Jay Caldwell, the knobs and dials create a juxtaposition between the technology of a bygone era and a laser-like focus on solving the latest challenges in medicine and science. I provided creative direction for the story.
Billed as the world’s best creative competition for editorial content, 68 publications were selected as finalists. UT Southwestern was one of five higher education affiliated publications named to the list. From this year’s Medal Finalists, Gold Medal and Silver Medal winners, along with the Gold Medals for the Best of Genre categories, will be announced during the annual awards presentation in June.
